The latest water filter from clean water experts MSR is the Trailshot - a fantastically lightweight and user-friendly unit that has been designed to be carried easily in a side-pocket for on-the-go use by superlight hikers and trail runners/adventure racers. The hollow fibre membrane blocks any nasties bigger than 0.2 microns which includes bacteria and protozoas and can be self-replaced after 2000 litres use.
